Review: Of Manners and Murder!

Of Manners and Murder is the first in the delightful new Dear Miss Hermione mystery series from Anastasia Hastings.

1885: London, England. When Violet's Aunt Adelia decides to abscond with her newest paramour, she leaves behind her role as the most popular Agony Aunt in London, "Miss Hermione," in Violet's hands.

And of course, the first letter Violet receives is full, not of prissy pondering, but of portent. Ivy Armstrong is in need of help and fears for her life. But when Violet visits the village where the letters were posted, she finds that Ivy is already dead.

She'll quickly discover that when you represent the best-loved Agony Aunt in Britain, both marauding husbands and murder are par for the course.

Review: I enjoyed reading this book! I thought it was a good beginning to a new historical mystery series, and I liked Violet as the lead character. I did guess the culprit and why they did what they did, but I enjoyed the journey of Violet figuring it out. I thought the premise was interesting (an advice column!), and has promise for more books! I particularly liked the introduction of another character towards the end of the story, and I am curious how that will play out in future books. Overall, I thought this was an interesting beginning to a new series, and I will be checking out the next book!

Review: Six Sweets Under!

Review: Six Sweets Under by Sarah Fox

Former actress Becca Ransom lived her dream in Hollywood for seven years before returning to her hometown of Larch Haven, Vermont. Known as the Venice of North America, Larch Haven has canals instead of roads, gondolas instead of cars, and charming cottages that look like they were plucked from the pages of a fairy tale. It’s also where Becca is pursuing her newest passion as a chocolatier at True Confections, the chocolate shop owned by her grandparents, Lolly and Pops.

While Becca’s testing new flavors and reconnecting with old friends, the town is gearing up for the annual Gondola Races, popular with both residents and tourists, with one exception. Local curmudgeon Archie Smith wants nothing more than to keep tourists away from Larch Haven. He’s determined to derail this year’s event and does his best to stir up trouble for the organizers, including Becca’s grandfather.

Following a heated argument with Pops, Archie is found floating face-down in the canal, and Pops finds himself in hot water as one of the top suspects. Becca’s determined to clear her grandfather’s name, but when the case heats up, she could be facing a sticky end.

Review: I thought this was a great start to a new cozy mystery series! Becca was a fantastic lead, and I loved that her family played such a big role in the book. The hints of the beginning of the romance that will happen in the next books was sweet, and I really liked the love interest. I thought the mystery was well done, and managed to surprise me with the culprit. The setting was really unique, and I loved the town! Overall, I really enjoyed this cozy, and I look forward to more books in the series featuring Becca!
