Blog Tour: Bloomsbury Girls - Review!

Natalie Jenner, the internationally bestselling author of The Jane Austen Society, returns with a compelling and heartwarming story of post-war London, a century-old bookstore, and three women determined to find their way in a fast-changing world in Bloomsbury Girls.

Bloomsbury Books is an old-fashioned new and rare bookstore that has persisted and resisted change for a hundred years, run by men and guided by the general manager's unbreakable fifty-one rules. But in 1950, the world is changing, especially the world of books and publishing, and at Bloomsbury Books, the girls in the shop have plans:

Vivien Lowry: Single since her aristocratic fiancé was killed in action during World War II, the brilliant and stylish Vivien has a long list of grievances--most of them well justified and the biggest of which is Alec McDonough, the Head of Fiction.

Grace Perkins: Married with two sons, she's been working to support the family following her husband's breakdown in the aftermath of the war. Torn between duty to her family and dreams of her own.

Evie Stone: In the first class of female students from Cambridge permitted to earn a degree, Evie was denied an academic position in favor of her less accomplished male rival. Now she's working at Bloomsbury Books while she plans to remake her own future.

As they interact with various literary figures of the time--Daphne Du Maurier, Ellen Doubleday, Sonia Blair (widow of George Orwell), Samuel Beckett, Peggy Guggenheim, and others--these three women with their complex web of relationships, goals and dreams are all working to plot out a future that is richer and more rewarding than anything society will allow.

ADVANCE PRAISE

"Jenner follows The Jane Austen Society (2020) with another top-notch reading experience, using the same deft hand at creating complex, emotionally engaging characters [against] a backdrop chock-full of factual historical information... Fans of Christina Baker Kline, Kate Quinn and Pam Jenoff [will] appreciate this gem." —Booklist (starred review)

"An illuminating yarn... Fans of emotional historical fiction will be charmed." —Publishers Weekly

"Bloomsbury Girls is an immersive tale of three women determined to forge their own paths in 1950s London. Jenner has proven to be a master at spinning charming, earnest characters and paints a vivid picture of postwar England. I wanted to stay lost in her world forever!" —Stephanie Wrobel, internationally bestselling author of Darling Rose Gold

"Bloomsbury Girls is a book lover's dream, one of those rare reads that elicits a sense of book-ish wistfulness and nostalgia. Jenner has created a colorful cast of characters in a story about friendship, perseverance, and the ways that determined women can band together in a man's world. You're in for a treat." —Sarah Penner, New York Times bestselling author of The Lost Apothecary

"In a London still reeling from the ravages of World War II and the changes war has brought to English society, three young women take their futures into their own hands. With Bloomsbury Girls, Natalie Jenner has penned a timely and beautiful ode to ambition, friendship, bookshops, and the written word." —Janet Skeslien Charles, New York Times bestselling author of The Paris Library

“In post-war London, Bloomsbury Books survived The Blitz until Vivien Lowry, Grace Perkins, and Evie Stone set off their own bomb on the stuffy all-male management. What ensues is the most delightful, witty, and endearing story you will read this year. Natalie Jenner, bestselling author of The Jane Austen Society, proves that she was not a one hit wonder. Like Austen, her second book is even better than the first.” —Laurel Ann Nattress, editor of Jane Austen Made Me Do It

A MESSAGE FROM AUTHOR NATALIE JENNER:

Dear readers, I am immensely grateful for the outpouring of affection that so many of you have expressed for my debut novel The Jane Austen Society and its eight main characters. When I wrote its epilogue (in one go and without ever changing a word), I wanted to give each of Adam, Mimi, Dr. Gray, Adeline, Yardley, Frances, Evie and Andrew the happy Austenesque ending they each deserved. But I could not let go of servant girl Evie Stone, the youngest and only character inspired by real life (my mother, who had to leave school at age fourteen, and my daughter, who does eighteenth-century research for a university professor and his team). Bloomsbury Girls continues Evie’s adventures into a 1950s London bookshop where there is a battle of the sexes raging between the male managers and the female staff, who decide to pull together their smarts, connections, and limited resources to take over the shop and make it their own. There are dozens of new characters in Bloomsbury Girls from several different countries, and audiobook narration was going to require a female voice of the highest training and caliber. When I learned that British stage and screen actress Juliet Stevenson, CBE, had agreed to narrate, I knew that my story could not be in better hands, and I so hope you enjoy reading or listening to it. Warmest regards, Natalie

Blog Tour: Killer On The Court (Murder, She Wrote) - Interview And Review!

Hi, everyone! Today I'm happy to be a part of the blog tour for the newest book in the Murder She Wrote series, Killer On The Court! Read on for my interview with Terrie Farley Moran, and my review of the book, plus there's a giveaway!

Interview:

Would you please describe your book, Murder, She Wrote: Killer on the Court, in seven words?

Family fun at Rockaway Beach until—MURDER!

I started watching Murder, She Wrote a couple of years ago, and I absolutely love it! What’s it like writing books based on the series?

I would say that both the show and the books are based on the character of Jessica Fletcher. She is polite but firm, always determined to ferret out the truth, but she never deliberately puts herself in harm’s way. One difference is that in the television show the audience sees events and hears conversations that Jessica doesn’t because she is not in every scene. Then she may, or may not, learn about them later. But the books are written in first person so Jessica must either observe what happens, someone has to tell her what they witnessed or she has to find a clue some other way. Jessica has to constantly gather the information to draw the right conclusion because in the books she is never offstage.

Random Question! What’s your favorite time of year?

Autumn. The heat of summer is behind me, winter’s frigid temperatures are not yet here. The leaves on the trees turn amazing colors and are as gorgeous as the flowers in Spring. And when the leaves fall, I can run and jump in them, which is always great fun.

What’s one piece of advice you would give aspiring authors?

Finish what you are writing. Even if you don’t think it’s good enough. Even if another concept or plot line diverts your attention. Discipline is essential. My mantra is: Writing is a job. Publishing is a business.

What are some mysteries you’ve recently read and enjoyed?

Oh, where to start? Independent Bones by Carolyn Haines, Cat Me if You Can by Miranda James, Mimi Lee Reads between the Lines by Jennifer J. Chow, A Killer Sundae by Abby Collette, Murder on an Irish Farm by Carlene O’Conner. As you can tell, I am a cozy mystery loyalist!!

Thank you so much for inviting me here today. I enjoyed our visit.

Review:

I love the Murder, She Wrote TV show, which has become a comfort watch for me. I was so looking forward to reading a book based on it (I haven't read any of the previous books in the series, but I plan on going back and checking them out!), and I'm happy to say it did not disappoint! This was a delightful way to revisit the characters, while also having an excellent mystery! Overall, I would definitely recommend this book to fans of MSW, and to anyone who enjoys a good mystery!

I received an e-ARC from the publisher and author.

Blog Tour: Spotlight/Review For Flirting With Fifty!

Review: Flirting with Fifty by Jane Porter

A sexy and sparkling later-in-life contemporary romance about a woman who leaps out of her comfort zone and takes a chance on love by New York Times bestselling author Jane Porter.

Paige Newsom is finally at a place in her life where she's comfortable. She loves her job as a college professor in Southern California, lives close enough to her mother to visit her regularly, and has three daughters who are flourishing in their own careers. Paige has no plans to upend her life again after her divorce eight years ago, but she's about to embark on a new adventure: co-teaching a course that includes a three-week international field study.

Paige can think of a dozen reasons why she shouldn't go, one being a dazzling Australian biologist who will be teaching alongside her. Professor Jack King is charismatic, a world traveler, and more like Indiana Jones than Indiana Jones, all of which unsettles Paige, who prides herself on being immune to any man's charms. As the two co-professors lead the rigorous program together, first on campus, then in beautiful Tanzania, Paige's biggest challenge will be working closely with Jack while resisting the undeniable chemistry she feels when she's with him.

Review: A Duke for Diana!

Review: A Duke for Diana by Sabrina Jeffries

A successful debut requires a smashing social event, and in this dazzling new series from New York Times bestselling author Sabrina Jeffries, the key ingredient is Elegant Occasions—a talk of the ton trio of creative, enterprising young ladies who’ve rejected working as governesses to become party planners. And if they, and their wealthy clients, happen to find love along the way, it just makes their efforts more rewarding...

Self-made civil engineer Geoffrey Brookhouse has unexpectedly inherited the dukedom of Grenwood. But he has a secret that could ruin his family. Hoping to save his timid sister from that fate, he seeks to marry her off to a respectable, protective gentleman. With the London Season imminent, Geoffrey hires Elegant Occasions to orchestrate her debut. Yet Lady Diana Harper, spirited fashion expert, proves more than he bargained for. Suddenly, Geoffrey’s sister is emerging from her shell, and he is beleaguered with social invitations and gossip! Worse, Diana is attempting to transform him into a presentable duke—when all he really wants is to win her heart...

Diana doesn’t know what to make of the handsome, disheveled duke. The man bristles at the very idea that his fashion faux pas might spoil his sister’s chances. Yet Geoffrey’s stubbornness simply inspires Diana to ruffle his feathers—by setting him on a course of self-improvement. Although there’s something endearing, even irresistible about his flaws, can a man who hates the ton tolerate a woman who makes her living catering to them? Little does either know that they have more in common than they suspect—and that two can create a society all their own...

-summary and cover via Goodreads

Plot: The premise of a trio of sisters who, after a scandal, have become event planners for the ton, was one that immediately got my attention. Add in a Duke, who doesn't want to be one, and who has a secret, hiring them to plan his sister's debut? I just knew I would enjoy this book, and I was right!

Characters: Diana and Geoffrey's chemistry was great, and I loved their bantering. Their families from her sisters, Eliza and Verity, to his sister Rosy and their mother were all delightful! I'm quite looking forward to the next book, Eliza's story, and after the little hints in this novel, I'm intrigued by what Verity's story will be!

The Cover: I like it, it's pretty!

Overall: This was a wonderful adult historical romance! I really enjoyed it, and I'm quite looking forward to the next books in the series. Overall, this is one I would definitely recommend!

I received an e-ARC from the publisher.

Review: How to Steal a Scoundrel's Heart!

In USA Today bestselling author Vivienne Lorret’s latest steamy romance, a determined debutante discovers that making a deal with a notorious rake might just give her more than she ever bargained for…

Ruined debutante Prudence Thorogood lost everything when she was ousted from polite society, including her inheritance. Now she’ll do anything to take back what’s hers… even if she has to steal it. Accepting a scandalous offer from Lord Savage seems like the perfect solution to disguise her criminal intentions from the ton. Until she discovers that there’s more to this scoundrel than meets the eye.

Leo Ramsgate, Marquess of Savage, has everything except for a heart. That organ dried up long ago after a devastating betrayal. Since then, he vowed never to trust or love again. He ensures that his dalliances are mutually satisfying, but always temporary… until he meets the reserved Miss Thorogood. Not one of his previous lovers has ever beguiled him the way she does. Not one has made him want to break his own rules. Not one has tempted him to keep her… forever.

Prue has every intention of disappearing from London after their affair ends. But her plan falters when she finds herself falling hopelessly in love with a man who may never love her in return. With time running out and so much at stake, she cannot help but wonder…

How to Steal a Scoundrel’s Heart?

-summary and cover

Plot: The premise of this one was really unique, and I quite liked Prue's misadventures at the beginning trying to (unsuccessfully) get back the items that were rightfully hers, and eventually having to seek Leo's help. And while the plot was fun, the relationship between Prue and Leo was truly the best part of the book for me!

Characters: I thought Prue was an absolutely fantastic main character! My heart broke for her and everything she had been through, and I loved reading about her gaining more confidence in herself. Leo fell for her so quickly, even though it took him quite awhile to realize that. (Leo and the clocks were hilarious, you'll know what I mean after you read the book!) And I liked all the supporting characters, particularly Prue's friends and Leo's butler.

The Cover: I like it!

Overall: I absolutely loved this book, and I highly recommend it to any fans of Historical Romances!

In this wildly entertaining and interactive adventure, YOU pick which suspects to interview, which questions to ask, and which clues to follow. You pick the path--you crack the case!

Carlos and Eliza may be going on separate paths, but their end goal is the same--keep the booby traps from taking their detective agency out! But with tricky puzzles and dozens of impossible choices, they need your help! Can you help Carlos and his friend find the lost treasure . . . and can you protect it from the culprit trying to steal it?

Can you help Carlos and his friends unravel the mystery before it's too late? Or will it be case closed?

Middle grade readers will enjoy all four books in this favorite series: Mystery in the Mansion (#1), Stolen from the Studio (#2), Haunting at the Hotel (#3), and Danger on the Dig (#4)!

-summary and cover via Goodreads

Review: This series is so much fun! Getting to not only read a mystery, but help solve it?? Um, of course I'm going to pick the book up! Unlike many choose your-own-adventure books (which I also love), with this series, not only do you get to help the characters with their choices of what suspects they talk to, and what they ask them, you also get to solve puzzles, which I love! Reading these books reminds me of playing the Nancy Drew games. I absolutely love these books as an adult, and I know as a kid I would have loved them even more. Overall, I definitely recommend this book (and the previous books) to anyone who loves a good mystery!

I received an e-ARC from the publisher.

Spotlight + Review: Every Summer After!

Six summers to fall in love. One moment to fall apart. A weekend to get it right.

They say you can never go home again, and for Persephone Fraser, ever since she made the biggest mistake of her life a decade ago, that has felt too true. Instead of glittering summers on the lakeshore of her childhood, she spends them in a stylish apartment in the city, going out with friends, and keeping everyone a safe distance from her heart.

Until she receives the call that sends her racing back to Barry’s Bay and into the orbit of Sam Florek—the man she never thought she’d have to live without.

For six summers, through hazy afternoons on the water and warm summer nights working in his family’s restaurant and curling up together with books—medical textbooks for him and work-in-progress horror short stories for her—Percy and Sam had been inseparable. Eventually that friendship turned into something breathtakingly more, before it fell spectacularly apart.

When Percy returns to the lake for Sam’s mother’s funeral, their connection is as undeniable as it had always been. But until Percy can confront the decisions she made and the years she’s spent punishing herself for them, they’ll never know whether their love might be bigger than the biggest mistakes of their past.

Told over the course of six years and one weekend, Every Summer After is a big, sweeping nostalgic look at love and the people and choices that mark us forever.

Review: The Agathas!

Review: The Agathas by Kathleen Glasgow & Liz Lawson

Last summer, Alice Ogilve’s basketball-star boyfriend Steve dumped her. Then she disappeared for five days. Where she went and what happened to her is the biggest mystery in Castle Cove, because she’s not talking. Or it was, at least. But now, another one of Steve’s girlfriends has vanished: Brooke Donovan, Alice’s ex–best friend. And it doesn’t look like Brooke will be coming back. . .

Enter Iris Adams, Alice’s tutor. Iris has her own reasons for wanting to disappear, though unlike Alice, she doesn’t have the money or the means. That could be changed by the hefty reward Brooke’s grandmother is offering to anyone who can share information about her granddaughter’s whereabouts. The police are convinced Steve is the culprit, but Alice isn’t so sure, and with Iris on her side, she just might be able to prove her theory.

In order to get the reward and prove Steve’s innocence, they need to figure out who killed Brooke Donovan. And luckily Alice has exactly what they need—the complete works of Agatha Christie. If there’s anyone that can teach the girls how to solve a mystery it’s the master herself. But the town of Castle Cove holds many secrets, and Alice and Iris have no idea how much danger they're about to walk into.

So when Roda rescues an injured crow on the instruction of her secret pen pal, Anonymous – whose letters arrive without warning and correctly predict the future – she's surprised to learn she's brought one of the so-called monsters home. Because her crow is really a shape-shifting boy named Ignis.

Ignis doesn't remember where he was going before he crashed. But Anonymous brought him and Roda together for a reason – and the only way to find out what Anonymous wants is to follow the trail of baffling clues in Roda's letters. Their perilous journey leads them into the mist and beyond, to a mysterious place called Nowhere. But Ignis has secrets, and the farther they get, the more Roda doubts she can trust him.

As a nefarious force closes in, they'll have to put aside their differences and work together. For they might be each other's only defense against an enemy who threatens their past, present, and future.

-summary and cover via Goodreads

Plot: I don't want to write too much about the plot of this book, for fear of spoiling people, but I will just say that I absolutely loved the plot of this book. This book reminded me of the Fantasy books I read when I was a kid, with new twists, and I mean that in the best way! This was such a creative, fantastical, wonderful book!

Characters: The characters were all great! I thought Rhoda and Ignis were good leads. The creatures and beings they met on their journey were so unique, and creative.

The Cover: I like it!

Overall: This was an absolutely wonderful Middle Grade novel, that I loved reading and is now a favorite! And after the ending, I hope we get a sequel. Overall, I highly recommend this MG book!
