Interview With Patricia Bailey!

Today is the first interview of Yay For Middle Grade Books! 2018! I'm happy to present an interview with Patricia Bailey, author of The Tragically True Adventures of Kit Donovan.

The bold font are the questions I asked, the regular font are her answers, and the bold italic font are my comments about her answers.

1. Would you please tell us a little about The Tragically True Adventures of Kit Donovan?

Thirteen-year-old Kit Donovan is sure she’s to blame when her mother dies of a fever. Guilt-ridden, she’s determined to honor her promises to her mother – namely to be a “proper lady.” Only being a lady in Goldfield, Nevada is tougher than it looks. When Kit convinces Papa to speak out about the dangers in a local gold mine, she learns that sometimes doing the right thing leads to trouble. Now Kit must find a way to expose the misdeeds before it’s too late. Unexpectedly, she finds help from a gruff neighbor, a Shoshone boy, and a newspaperman, and she puts her big mouth and all the life skills she’s learned from reading The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn to work. With a man’s hat and a printing press, Kit defies threats of violence and discovers that justice doesn’t always look like she imagined it would. Neither does being a lady.

2. Your book is a historical set in 1905. If you could time travel for a day to anytime and place in history, where and when would you go?

Just one place for one day is tough. I’m doing some research on the run up to WWII right now, so work me would love to spend a day wandering around my home town and listening to what people have to say about the war. Regular me wouldn’t mind having lunch with Dorothy Parker and the Algonquin Round Table anytime in the 1920’s, though I’m pretty sure I wouldn’t be cool enough to keep up with them – even as a time traveler.

That would be neat! :)

3. Random question! What's your favorite color?

I can never commit to a favorite, but for today, I’ll say blue.

Blue is my favorite! :)

4. If you're able to talk about it, what are you currently working on?

Right now I’m trying to finish a Middle Grade contemporary novel set in the Pacific Northwest. I’m also researching a historical novel that will take place near the small Oregon town I grew up in.

5. What are some of your favorite MG books you've read? And what are some that you're looking forward to reading?

Recently, I read and loved Kate DiCamillo’s Raymie Nightingale and Jenn Bishop’s The Distance to Home. I can’t wait to read Like Vanessa by Tami Charles, Ivy Aberdeen’s Letter to the World by Ashley Herring Blake, and The Science of Breakable Things by Tae Keller.

There are good sounding books here! :)

Thank you to Ms. Bailey for participating in this event! :)
