Yay For Middle Grade Books! Interview With Julie Buxbaum!

Hi, everyone! Today I'm happy to present an interview with Julie Buxbaum, who is the author of the MG novel, The Area 51 Files (illustrated by Lavanya Naidu), which releases in September! She is also the author of multiple YA novels, including Year on Fire, which is out now.

Would you please tell us a little about your book, The Area 51 Files?
The Area 51 Files is about a twelve year old girl named Sky Patel-Baum who is sent to live with the mysterious uncle she's never met, who it turns out lives in THE Area 51. He's also the head of the FBAI--that is the Federal Bureau of Alien Investigations. And did I mention Area 51 is filled with aliens? It is. Lots and lots of aliens. Before long, Sky makes a new best friend, Elvis (from the planet Galzoria) and with her pet hedgehog Spike and his dog Pickles, they team up to solve the mystery behind a recent alien kidnapping.

You also had another YA novel release this year, Year on Fire! Would you like to tell everyone a little about it?
I've long been interested in those moments in life where everything changes, when you wake up in one world and go to sleep in another. But in all of my previous books those life changing moments are invariably bad--a death, a car accident, 9/11. With Year on Fire, I wanted to write a book where everything changes because of something good, and so the novel is all about how four best friends lives are forever altered by a ten second earth-shattteringly amazing kiss.

Random Question! What’s your favorite holiday?
Christmas! I'm Jewish and my husband is Sikh, and yet, I still love love love Christmas. We go all out: a giant tree, matching pjs, advent calendars, the whole nine yards.

If you're able to talk about it, what are you currently working on?
The Area 51 File is a series, and so I'm currently putting the finishing touches on the second book, called The Big Flush, and outlining the third!

What are some of your favorite MG books you've read recently? And what are some that you're looking forward to reading?
I'm currently reading Rex Ogle's Free Lunch, which so far is beautiful and heart wrenching. I can't wait for Sarah Mlynowski's new series Best Wishes.

Thank you to Julie Buxbaum for participating in this event! :)
