Yay For Middle Grade Books! Interview With Stephanie Kate Strohm!

Hi, everyone! Today I'm happy to present an interview with Stephanie Kate Strohm, the author of Once Upon a Tide, which is out now! She is also the author of multiple YA novels, including her upcoming graphic novel debut, Twelfth Grade Night (with Molly Horton Booth and Jamie Green), which releases in October.

Would you please tell us a little about your book, Once Upon a Tide?

Once Upon a Tide tells the story of Lana, a half-human, half-mermaid princess who's spent most of her life underwater. On her fourteenth birthday, when she goes to visit her mom on land for her annual trip to the Royal Festival, nothing goes as planned. An earthquake threatens her home underwater, Lana's mom has a big surprise, and Lana develops some very unexpected abilities. Once Upon a Tide is a little bit about politics, a lot about family, and most of all about finding your voice.

Your debut YA graphic novel, Twelfth Grade Night, (with Molly Horton Booth and Jamie Green) releases this year as well! Would you like to tell everyone a little about it?

Twelfth Grade Night, the first book in the Arden High graphic novel series, is a contemporary retelling of Shakespeare's Twelfth Night set at a modern, magical high school. When Vi heads to public school and her twin brother Sebastian stays at private school, Vi needs to figure out who she is without her brother - which is hard enough without stumbling into a love triangle with broody and beautiful poet-slash-influencer, Orsino, and everyone's dream girl, Olivia. Working on this book with Molly and Jamie has been an absolute highlight of my writing career, and I can't wait for everyone  to read it!!

Random Question! What’s your favorite color?

Pink! Specifically a very pale pink, like ballet shoes.

If you're able to talk about it, what are you currently working on?

Right now, I'm working on two different graphic novel scripts. King Cheer, the second book in the Arden High series, is a retelling of King Lear set on the cheer squad and the basketball team (with fewer eyeballs being gouged out, but still with plenty of drama!) I'm also working on adapting Straight On Till Morning, the Peter Pan Twisted Tale book by Liz Braswell, into a graphic novel.

What are some of your favorite MG books you've read recently? And what are some that you're looking forward to reading?

I love, love, LOVED The Chance to Fly by Ali Stroker and Stacy Davidowitz. Everything Debbi Michiko Florence writes is a slam dunk for me, so I can't wait for Sweet and Sour! (I also grew up in Connecticut and worked at Mystic Seaport for a summer, so I'm extra excited to read a book set in Mystic, CT.)

Thank you to Stephanie Kate Strohm for participating in this event! :)
