Hi, everyone! Today I'm happy to present an interview with Molly Horton Booth and Stephanie Kate Strohm, the authors of
Twelfth Grade Night (illustrated by Jamie Green), which releases in October! They are also the authors of multiple other books, including Molly's YA novel,
Nothing Happened, and Stephanie's YA novel,
Prince in Disguise, which are both out now.
Would you both please tell us a little about your book, Twelfth Grade Night?
Stephanie: Twelfth Grade Night is a retelling of Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night, set at a modern, magical high school. Vi thinks the hardest thing about starting a new school will be being without her twin Sebastian for the first time ever…but that’s before falling for Orsino, who has a crush on Olivia, who has a crush on Vi…it’s complicated.
Molly: What Steph said! We loved getting to retell this play, bringing out the queer themes in it, with a cast we truly adore — Jamie’s art brings them to life in ways Steph and I never dreamed possible, really. Also, fun fact: One day when we cosplay as the characters, Jamie will be Vi, Steph will be Olivia, and I’ll be Toby.
Twelfth Grade Night is the first in the series, is there anything you can tell us about book 2?
Stephanie: King Cheer is an adaptation of King Lear set on Arden High’s cheerleading squad and basketball team. Although it’s not quite as bloody as Lear (everyone’s eyeballs are safe!), I loved exploring some of the themes and characters from my favorite Shakespearean tragedy in a new way.
Molly: I feel like King Cheer is like if King Lear and Bring It On fused together? It was a total blast to write. And even though it’s based on a tragedy, unlike book 1, it’s still heartfelt and goofy the way that TGN is. I can’t wait for everyone to read them both!
Random Question! What’s your favorite color?
Molly: Pink and blue!
Stephanie: pink! Ballet pink.
If you’re able to talk about it, what are you both currently working on?
Molly: Everything I’m writing solo is a secret! You can probably guess though that some of it is based on classic literature and that it’s also super queer.
And while it’s also a secret, I will say that Steph and I have another project we’re working on that I’m so pumped about.
Stephanie: Right now, we're seeing Jamie’s illustrations come in for King Cheer, which is so exiting! (And trying trim a few words so Jamie doesn’t have to squish their speech bubbles quite so much.) I also just received first pass pages for the graphic novel adaptation of Part of Your World (The Little Mermaid Twisted Tale) and just started the editorial process for Straight On Till Morning (Peter Pan Twisted Tale).
What are some of your favorite Romance books? And what are some you’re looking forward to reading?
Molly: I’m a huge fan of PRINCE IN DISGUISE by Stephanie Kate Strohm — the coziest romance I’ve ever read. Right now, I’m tearing through the Bridgerton series, so I’m looking forward to Eloise’s story, TO SIR PHILLIP WITH LOVE, next!
Stephanie: Recently, I loved Weather Girl by Rachel Lynn Solomon, and I'm so excited for Drunk On Love by Jasmine Guillory and For Her Consideration by Amy Spalding.
Thank you to both Molly Horton Booth and Stephanie Kate Strohm for participating in this event! :)
