Hi, everyone! Today I'm happy to present an interview with Leslie Vedder, the author of The Bone Spindle, which releases today!
Would you please describe your book, The Bone Spindle, in seven words?
Fun, magical, action-packed, quippy, fluttery romance
The Bone Spindle is a retelling of Sleeping Beauty, and I have to ask: What are some of your favorite fairytales?
I’ve always loved the fantasy and whimsy of fairytales—mermaids and fairy bargains and monsters in the woods. But what really made me fall in love with the genre was discovering fairytale reimaginings! It’s so fun to see the stories you remember remixed and reinvented in brand-new ways. Books like Malinda Lo’s Sapphic Cinderella retelling, ASH. Movies like Maleficent that make the villain the hero. And TV series like Once Upon a Time that turn all the fairytales on their heads like the ultimate fanfiction crossover mash-up!
Random Question! What is your favorite time of year?
I love fall and winter—really any time the weather gets cold enough for sweaters and hot drinks. There’s nothing I love more than curling up under a blanket with hot cocoa and a book, or an anime, or a movie and snuggling with my cats.
What’s one piece of advice you would give aspiring authors?
It’s a little cliché, but work on the project of your heart. Getting a book published can be such a long, wonderful, difficult, amazing—and sometimes, frankly, painful—process, it’s only going to be worth it if you’re working on something you really love. It sounds simple, but it actually took me a long time to start writing books that were meaningful to me instead of chasing after my perception of what kinds of books sell.
What are some books you’re looking forward to reading in 2022? And if you’ve already read some ‘22 books, would you like to mention them?
There are so many books I’m looking forward to in 2022! One of the best perks they don’t tell you about being an author is the chance to get a hold of advance copies of upcoming books. That is one bonus I’ve been taking full advantage of! Here are some 2022 fantasy books that I’ve already read and loved coming out in the next few months!!!!
